Job Details:  Project Geologist

A Project Geologist works under the direction and supervision of Senior/Associate Geologists, is responsible for routine project management, and is involved in budget management.  The Project Geologist must be capable of properly performing standard investigation techniques, strong command of regional soils and rock identification and properties, geologic hazards identification, and all applicable forms of construction observation/ testing.  Focus of employment is to complete training in engineering geology, expand the project/investigation expertise, further develop an understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, and augment skills in technical and business correspondence preparation.  A Project Geologist must be registered as a Geologist-in-Training in the State of California and reports to the Chief Geologist of Stoney-Miller Consultants.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and contracts, involving determination of the scope of investigation, including borings/test pits (type, depth, location), sampling method and frequency, and laboratory testing requirements.

  • Understand and follow the ethical direction of the Corporation.

  • Assist in the review and maintenance of the project budget

  • Assist/Conduct field investigation, including borings/test pits. Compile geologic data (boring/test pit logs, field mapping, cross-sections, etc.) and interpret appropriate geologic issues and hazards.

  • Assist in the engineering analyses, under review of supervisory engineers. Analyses may include slope stability, liquefaction, and seismic design recommendations.

  • Prepare geotechnical reports in conjunction with the Project/Senior/Associate geologist and engineers, including laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and review of graphics depicting recommendations.

  • Perform field observations and coordinate testing during construction activities, including grading, deep and shallow foundations, and tiebacks. 

  • Assist/Coordinate the communication of project logistics with the owner/contractor.

  • Prepare final geotechnical reports of observations and testing performed during construction.

  • Assist in the training of Staff professionals

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Education/Experience:  BA/BSc plus 3 to 5 years progressive experience.

  • Registration/Certification:  Geologist-in-Training
